Councillor Donates Trophies To Schools

Primary schools in Tlokweng received a major boost last week when a local councillor, Justice Sera donated three trophies for sports competitions. The trophies were handed over in a ceremony held at Kgosikgosi Primary School in Tlokweng on Thursday.

The schools to benefit are Kgosikgosi, Botsalano, Batlokwa, Mafitlhakgosi and Kgale. The councillor said that it is important to encourage people to take part in sports especially children as it helps to shape their lives positively. "Sports is very important in helping to overcome most of the problems associated with our children especially in the sense that they keep away from indulging in things like crime and alcohol abuse," he said. Sera is the councillor for Sefoke Ward in Tlokweng. He said that these days, sports should be taken seriously at a tender age as it may help sustain one's life financially in future. He added that with the high unemployment rate in the country, it is important to know that sports can be a source of livelihood just like any other job.

Sera stated that Toronto, one of the biggest cities in Canada is in partnership with the South East District Council which includes Tlokweng and advised the teachers from different schools in the area to take advantage of this. He urged the teachers to form sports teams because Toronto is willing to help them with facilities and equipment. "They once gave us 60 balls and nets but because we had not formed teams at the time, they ended up going to Ramotswa," he said.  He added that Toronto is willing to help the South East District Council for five to six years. He urged the teachers to involve out of school youth in the sports teams they form to keep them out of mischief and hopefully give them a chance to shape their lives. Sera told the teachers to always confront their councillors in cases of shortage of coaches so that they can help solve such problems. He said that the government should look at swimming as a pilot project because it involves a lot of exercising which may help children to stay healthy.
