COSASSA team redeems lost pride

Botswana's Under-17 youngsters redeemed some of the country's lost pride in sports by winning five medals and finishing second at the Confederations of Southern Africa School Sports Association (COSSASA) games in Mbabane, Swaziland over the weekend.

The good performance is a welcome break from a long losing streak by Botswana sports teams in international competitions. The Botswana girls' volleyball team retained the gold they won last year after sweeping aside all opposition while the boys got bronze. The girls' basketball team won silver while the boys came back with bronze. It was a disastrous outing for Botswana in soccer as the boys lost all their four games unlike last year when they won bronze.

The girls did better in soccer, grabbing a silver although this was not as good as last year when they won gold. The netball team registered heavy losses only managing a win against Lesotho. Besides Botswana, the other countries at the tournament were Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland and South Africa. Overall, Botswana finished second behind South Africa with five medals; one gold, two silver and two bronze. South Africa walked away with five gold and two silver. Swaziland came third with four medals followed by Namibia with three while Lesotho was last with two bronze.
