Controversy mars boxing tourney

Zimbabwe's boxing officials have threatened to file a protest to the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) following the disqualification of their featherweight boxer, Foster Masiyambumbi at the ongoing Africa Zone IV Championships.

Masiyambumbi was allegedly barred from competing because he was over the weight limit of 57kg. But a Zimbabwean boxing official has said this is an anomaly caused by the weighing scales that gave conflicting readings about the boxer's weight. Petros Masiyambumbi, Zimbabwe's head of delegation, said the weighing scales provided by the Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA) are not standardised and that is why their boxer had two different weights.

"They (BOBA) had provided two scales, but the two scales were not standardised such that they gave varied weights of the boxers. Foster (Masiyambumbi) weighed 700g more on one of the scales and then a kilogram more on the other, which does not make sense. So we lodged our complaint because they disqualified him for that. If no action is taken, we will take the matter further," said Petros Masiyambumbi.
