Constituency tournaments: Khama leaves unanswered questions

When President Ian Khama delivered the State of the Nation address in Parliament on Monday, he revealed that constituency tournaments continue to grow in popularity especially among the youth, but did not touch on some contentious issues surrounding the controversial competition.

"The participation rates have grown from 28,476 at inception to 64,542 during the ninth cycle which ended in July 2011," he said. He also acknowledged the performances of the Zebras, who qualified for AFCON 2012 for the first time as well as other athletes among them, Amantle Montsho and Kabelo Kgosiemang.

While the figures stated by the President confirm the popularity of the constituency tournaments, Khama chose not to speak about the effect the tournament has on mainstream competition. Football stakeholders have in the past voiced their disapproval of the tournaments, and other codes have equally complained. Botswana Football Association (BFA) never hid their view about the tournaments, as they believed it somehow defeats what the association attempts to achieve as far as football development is concerned.
