President Ian Khama has once again defended the controversial constituency league.

During his State of the Nation Address on Friday, Khama said constituency sports tournaments have proved to be a popular success. He said that his brain-child has been taken up by 1,582 football, 66 netball and 45 volleyball teams. "We shall therefore continue to support these competitions, which are providing entertainment, promoting fitness and inculcating a spirit of camaraderie and shared values among participants in all 57 constituencies," he said.

He explained that annual sports festivals will continue to be held in different districts and sub-districts. Traditional games will be among the activities in the festivals to promote national heritage, Khama said.
