Comets furious at judgement

Jwaneng Comets have been seething in anger after the Premier League promotion play-offs organising committee ordered them to play Miscellaneous for the third time in two weeks.

Comets beat Miscellaneous 1-0 in the last match of the play-offs on Sunday and thought they had qualified for the Premier League, only for the organisers to turn tables on them. The organisers ordered that the two sides must play each other again to decide who makes it to the Premier League after Comets' 12-1 win over Mogoditshane Fighters was nullified following match-fixing allegations. Now the Jwaneng side is demanding explanations from the committee because it feels it won promotion ahead of Miscellaneous on goal difference.

Comets chairman, Njabulo Gilika said they demanded an explanation from the committee after receiving a letter informing them of the game against Miscellaneous this weekend and by yesterday they were still waiting for a response.  "First we won the play-offs and should have been officially promoted on Sunday; secondly we do not understand what the document from the committee is saying. The heading talks of the amendment of our game against Miscellaneous but we played two games with them and it is not clear which one is being amended. It says we shall play for 90 minutes and if there is no winner then it is penalty. We would not want to assume that the statement means that the game shall go for penalty shoot out; we want them to clarify this. We also want to understand what neutrality means to them, whether it means playing anywhere as long as it is not in one of the team's grounds or if it is about playing in an area where the two teams would meet halfway," Gilika said. It was however, immediately not clear if Comets would honour the fixture with reports that both Comets and Fighters have challenged the committee's ruling. The fixture itself hangs in the balance if both teams have lodged a protest.
