Clijsters forced to retire with hurt shoulder

Kim Clijsters, the world No2, was forced to retire with a shoulder injury during her fourth-round match against France's Marion Bartoli at Indian Wells.

The score was 3-6, 3-1 at the time and the decision was a precaution with Fed Cup duties and the claycourt season on the horizon. Bartoli, the 15th seed, advances to the quarter-finals where she will face the 19th-seed, Ana Ivanovic, who beat the defending champion and her fellow Serb, Jelena Jankovic, 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday.

Although Clijsters had won the opening set, she summoned her trainer for treatment on her shoulder when trailing 2-1 in the second and withdrew one game later. "It's not that I'm really, really worried about it, but it is something that I have to pay attention to and that I don't want to risk," said the 27-year-old Belgian, who won in Indian Wells in 2003 and 2005.
