Moments after being crowned this year’s Metropolitan National Chess champion, FIDE Master, Phemelo Khetho was scathing over what he termed little prize money. He received P8,000 for winning the tournament. After he won the Easter competition, Khetho said the prize money should have been higher and the Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) has failed players.

Khetho said each of the 248 players who took part in the tournament was paid P100 and this means the prize money should have been increased. He said it was clear that the BCF spent only P47,000 of the P80,000-plus available on prizes. He wondered where the rest of the money went.

Khetho said the federation should explain to the players where the money went. He complained that more money should have been spent on prizes instead of administrative issues.
