Chess duo off to Madagascar

The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) yesterday sent the 2012 Metropolitan National champions, Providence Oathotse (Candidate Master) and Boikhutso Mudongo (Women Fide Master) for the Zonal Championships in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

"The Zonal championships serve as qualifiers for the Africa Individual Championships as well as 2013 World Championships," according to a BCF statement. Both players are also part of the national team that will present Botswana in the 2012 Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey. The players are expected home on May 21. Oathotse, along with Phemelo Khetho recently participated in the Capablanca Chess Tournament in South Africa where he finished fifth in Category A, which had top players from South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Mudongo meanwhile, took part in an international tournament in Angola where she finished fourth in the women's bracket. She was accompanied by Tshepiso Lopang.

South African women's champion, Anzel Solomons as well as Grandmasters from Europe graced the Angolan event.
