*Poor facilities hamper progress
* Some students miss out
* Fresh approach urged

MOGODITSHANE: Much still needs to be done to improve the running of Centres of Sports Excellence (CSE), Mogoditshane Senior School sports master, Basimanebotlhe Thelo has said.Thelo told Mmegi Sport during a ceremony where the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) donated sports equipment to the school.The school is a centre of excellence for boxing, karate, football, netball and athletics. Thelo said the process of sending students to the centres should be revisited because there is never information about their sporting preferences."As a results we are forced to scout around the school to find what different students could be talented in," he said. Thelo said this has resulted in some students shunning sport after being sent to the centre.The centre also does not have qualified coaches and uses volunteering teachers.

Thelo said there is need to maintain facilities. At the time of visiting the school, sprinklers at the soccer ground were not working. The school uses recycled water for the ground lawn and according to Thelo the sprinklers appeared to be blocked. "We do not know what to do because we lack expertise in taking care for such," he said.Thelo added that they also need more equipment to be able to attract more students to sport. He also complained about lack of facilities for indoor sports."We have been training students in class rooms but the space is small," he said. Thelo, however, said despite the challenges the school has been doing well in competitions.
