Can Thammano inspire Killer Giants?

At 35, former Township Rollers' midfielder Gabaletlhege 'Bashin' Thammano believes he has what it takes to help Killer Giants to gain promotion to the Premier League.

After failing once again at the last hurdle to make it to the elite league, the Ramotswa side recruited the ageing midfielder from the defunct Blue Diamonds.Thammano is not worried that he might not match the pace of young players. He says he uses his brains more than his brawn to beat opponents. "The way I play does not demand speed and even if I am faced with tricky youngsters who have the pace, I always find a way to close them down before they cause any damage. It is just about positioning yourself well and good anticipation so that you will be first on the ball," Thammano said.

The former Rollers'star is hoping that history will repeat itself for him at Killer Giants. He played a pivotal role in helping Mahalapye Hotspurs gain promotion to the now defunct Super League during the 1994-1995 season. "I know it is a different ball game this time round because I am playing with different players under a different environment but the language of football is similar and Killer Giants have already shown ambition before. It is only that they became complacent in the last stages of the league and lost it. But with me and Mopako (Donald) back together again with our experience, I believe we can guide the young players and put the team on the right track.," he said."I know the First Division is demanding especially because the players are both physical and fast but I am up to the task. If your opponents are faster than you, then you slow down the pace and spray passes to attack in a way that does not demand the use of too much energy and you will find them (opponents) lost," he explained.
