Can Chiefs reclaim it?

Ever since it was formed in 1972, Mochudi Centre Chiefs has always played second fiddle to other giants when it came to winning soccer titles.

This changed momentarily in the 2007-2008 season when under the chairmanship of Ernest Molome, the club swept every title on offer. Magosi shocked the football community when they went 30 league games without defeat and to put the cherry on top, they won the Coca-Cola Cup and Kabelano Charity Cup. Officially, Magosi went 35 games unbeaten during the season, a record that might take sometime to breach.

In the past season, despite suffering an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Township Rollers in the opening game, Magosi managed to push eventual winners, Gaborone United (GU), to the wire. The league was decided on the last day with the Reds beating Chiefs 1-0. In the Coke Cup, their challenge ended in the semis when they lost to eventual winners Uniao Flamengo Santos. Though most supporters were disappointed at the failure to defend the titles, Chiefs performed well considering the pressure they were under throughout the campaign. At the start of the current season, Chiefs have lost captain Pontsho Moloi and first-choice goalkeeper Noah Maposa to South African First Division side Bay United.  The duo was key in the last two seasons. Frustrated Gobonyeone 'Shoes' Selefa crossed to GU. To make matters worse, title-winning coach Beston Chambeshi headed back to his native Zambia. Can the Chiefs survive without Moloi and Maposa to win back the league title? After the departure of the duo, Chiefs have made good signings in utility player Mpoeleng 'Stopper' Mpoeleng, goalkeeper Mompoloki 'Wrist' Sephekolo from Notwane and hot-shot Musonda Mweuka from Zambia. Coach Wesley Mondo has replaced his compatriot, Chambeshi. He will continue working with Innocent Morapedi and Zacharia Muzadzi as his assistants.
