Budding moto-cross star faces bleak future

Lack of funds is threatening to put paid to 11-year-old Kitso Malebogo's childhood dream of becoming a world beater in motor sport.

His progression from a hot prospect in 2004 is being hampered by lack of finances that could see him compete against his peers in South Africa and Namibia. Although he has always beaten visiting Namibian and South African riders, Malebogo is yet to compete outside Botswana. In a sport, which has not yet gained affiliation to the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC), the young pupil at Mamogwe Primary School at Ledumadumane in Mogoditshane now fears that his prospects are limited if no one comes to his rescue.

When he first burst onto the moto-cross scene at the age of eight as the only Motswana boy, he made wonders as he finished first in four competitions in which he took part, including the flat track and moto-cross. Malebogo's amazing skills impressed many fans mainly because he tended to compete against more experienced riders. For instance, soon after his first two competitions at Mmopane and Selebi-Phikwe in 2004, Malebogo dumped his preferred 50cc motorbike for bigger KTM 65cc scooter, throwing himself in the deep end against riders aged between nine years and 13 years. In his first attempt on the 65cc in Selebi-Phikwe the same year, he finished third in the flat track category, but came first in the moto-cross, with a 50cc motorbike.
