Btv might fail to broadcast AFCON finals

Batswana may be denied the opportunity to watch the live transmission of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals due to the exorbitant fees charged by broadcast right holders, SportFive, a French television company.

The Zebras will make their debut at the finals to be co-hosted in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.SportFive have secured the exclusive rights to the African Nations Cup games until 2016.

The state-owned Botswana Television (Btv) admits the French company's asking price may be too steep for them.Btv failed to screen Zebras' final AFCON qualifier against Togo in Lome on Sunday amid revelations that SportFive were charging exorbitant fees for the qualifiers. Btv is not alone in this dilemma, as Nigerian television stations NTA and AIT also failed to screen the Super Eagles' game against Madagascar after refusing to pay US$750,000 (P4.9 million) for signals.
