The Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) officials are happy that their endeavours to develop the game at grassroots level are bearing fruit.

BTA sport development officer for administration Tuelo Serufo said that they have taken a step in the right direction following the success of the just-ended week-long inaugural John Pickles Junior Open National Championships. The newly introduced tournament attracted 110 youngsters. It was held at the tennis centre in Gaborone last week to give young players exposure. The event is one of the newly introduced tournaments to be held only during school holidays to attract more junior players. It is part of an earlier training camp at the same venue where 60 juniors were introduced to technical aspects of the game.

Serufo said they are thrilled by the large turnout, which shows that there are more youngsters who can be developed with proper mentoring. "This is a step in the right direction. From the tournament, we have noticed that we can achieve good results in future if we continue hosting tournaments of these nature," said an impressed Serufo. He added that the players exhibited zeal and talent during the competition.
