The Botswana Softball Association (BSA) has launched 'Operation Ipelegeng' to raise money for its leagues after failing to get sponsorship in recent years. BSA president Marumo Morule told a press conference on Thursday that the initiative involves BSA and its affiliates pooling resources together to run the leagues.

He revealed that the affiliates would each contribute P2,000 to run the league. He pointed out that circumstances have changed and that clubs no longer want to play for small amounts of money. "We feel it is time we stand up and do something. Our clubs are many and we cannot afford to get enough sponsorship for them," he said. Morule believe that clubs will do their best in raising the money. He said raising money is one of the conditions to play in the league. He encouraged the affiliates to work hard to get funds and help the BSA. He said they intend to go into partnership with the entire nation, as the stakes are too high for the BSA alone. The softball boss added that the main league would be divided into north and south. The national championship will be held at the end of the season with the winners representing the country at the Zone Six club tournament.

He pointed out that the Zone Six promotional play-offs were hectic and very expensive and that is why they have decided to avoid them. Morule said the regional tournament was postponed because they did not want to host an event destined to fail. He said the main focus of BSA is on the development of players and officials. In pursuit of this, they intend to lure more children to softball with programmes targeting six-year-olds. He said they want to retain retired players and officials and hence plans to start a Masters League.
