BPL board flexes muscle

The Botswana Premier League (BPL) executive committee has been dissolved and immediately replaced on an interim basis for alleged abuse of office.

Notwane boss Segolame Ramotlhwa and his Prisons XI counterpart, Anthony Mokento, have been appointed to replace the Spencer Mmui-led executive. The Township Rollers chairman, Mmui, and Extension Gunners boss William Maboane are alleged to have abused their positions as members of the committee when they loaned themselves funds from the league's coffers in October last year without authorisation from the board. It is alleged that Mmui and Maboane were given cash advances of P12, 000 and P20, 000 respectively.

The third executive member Sonny Phiri has also been ousted despite not taking any cash advance. According to the Botswana Football Association (BFA) constitution, the powers to decide on issues of loans or any financial assistance lies with the BPL General Assembly. Section 10.5.8 of the constitution reads: "... to grant loans and or grants in aid of its organ, member club or sub-committee of the league and to fix the terms of repayment thereof subject to approval by the national executive committee." The assembly only gives to members and organs of the league rather than individuals. The issue has since been referred to the BFA National Executive Committee (NEC).
