FIFA has said it did not receive Botswana’s votes for the Ballon d’Or award from Zebras’ captain, Joel Mogorosi and coach Peter Butler.
Only the media award vote, cast by the Botswana Gazette’s Oaitse Mathala appears on the full list of voters.
Real Madrid and Portugal forward, Cristiano Ronaldo was crowned the Ballon d’Or winner on Monday night in Zurich, but Botswana’s votes were missing.
Mogorosi insists that they voted while they were in camp for the Zebras and he is not sure why this is not reflected in FIFA. “We did vote while in camp. We were given the forms, filled and handed them over to the manager,” Mogorosi said yesterday.
FIFA said the votes were not received before the deadline. “We never received the original documents with the signatures. We need to have the original document, otherwise the votes are invalid. The (Botswana) BFA has been reminded a couple of times,” a FIFA spokesperson, Giovanni Marti told Mmegi Sport.
Efforts to get a comment from Botswana Football Association (BFA) chief executive officer, Keith Masters proved futile at press time, while the association’s president, Tebogo Sebego is away in Equatorial Guinea.
Ronaldo beat Barcelona star, Lionel Messi and Germany goalkeeper, Manuel Neur to the biggest individual football award.
