Botswana Tops Zone VI Volleyball

The national women volleyball team arrived home last week after finishing first in the Zone VI competition in Malawi. Only three countries took part. Namibia finished second while Malawi was third. Shortly after arrival, Botswana captain Lekedzani Bayi said the competition was an eye-opener for them.

She said though they have played the two countries before, there are always new lessons to learn from meeting them again. Bayi bubbles with excitement when she talks about how her team impressed at the tournament. She said volleyball in Zone VI is growing and Botswana is more prepared more than ever for the Africa Cup billed for Algeria at the end of the month. She acknowledged that the competition is not going to be easy but said they are out to compete.

Assistant coach Isaac Samuel said the Zone VI event helped them to identify weaknesses. He said his girls were good though there is still room for improvement. "I would not say they were a hundred percent perfect but I was satisfied with their performance," Samuel added. He said that though only a few countries competed, they got good competition and preparation ahead of the Africa Cup. He said Namibia is a good side with tall players that intimidated his girls. He said Malawi were not tough but proved difficult because of home ground advantage.
