Botswana has picked a strong 64-strong squad to defend its Zone VI Karate title in Maputo, Mozambique. The team of 40 juniors and 24 seniors leaves today for the six-nation competition.

The Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) spokesperson, Jerry Ditlhong said they are sending a high number of juniors to give them exposure. He said their target is to see all karatekas win medals. He added that the availability of the new Karate training centre, the Dojo has helped the team to prepare thoroughly. He said the team assembled two months ago and had sufficient training. Senior team coach, Mpho Bakwadi said his team is ready to defend the title.

South Africa used to dominate the Zone VI competition but Botswana put a halt to this last year. Bakwadi said the team has been training since January and most of the karatekas have been active, taking part in local and international competitions.
