Botswana Hosts First Zonal Hayashi-Ha Event

The Botswana Hayashi-Ha Karate Union will host the Zone VI senior and junior championships for the first time on Saturday at Boipuso Hall. However, only two countries - South Africa and Botswana - will participate in the tournament. Hosts Botswana is expected to field more than 100 karatekas while South Africa will bring more than 80 participants. Hayashi-Ha spokesperson Jerry Ditlhong said Zimbabwe and Zambia failed to make it because of financial problems.

He added that they decided to go on with the competition despite the low turn out. However, he explained that both Zimbabwe and Zambia would send officials. The competition will feature both kata and kumite. Ditlhong said the low turn out would not affect the quality of the competition, as both countries have good karatekas.
From the Botswana side, the names to watch are national team icons and Zone VI all styles gold medallists Ofentse Bakwadi, Tebogo Molapong and Nonofo Kesitile. One of the most recognisable karateka in the South African team is Sa-adiya Larney. Ditlhong said Hayashi-Ha has enjoyed tremendous growth since its establishment in Botswana six years ago. He stated that it is through the recognition of the sport that Botswana has been given the opportunity to host the tournament. Ditlhong said they hope to have learnt something at the end of the tournament with intentions to host bigger events. He added that preparations for the tournament, sponsored by Western Union and ITI are at an advanced stage. He revealed that they have secured accommodation for the visitors and the venue for the tournament. The event will be used as part of preparations for the All Africa Games next month.
