A lot was expected from team Botswana as five boxers reached the finals of the fourth Africa Boxing Cup on Friday, but a paltry performance saw only one boxer winning on the night as the country finished third behind Algeria and Mauritius.

The country's flag was hoisted high once as light flyweight boxer Mooketsi Lekgetho won gold after defeating South African Lebogang Pilane 24-13. Lekgetho was all over Pilane in the second and third rounds after narrowly winning the first round 6-5. In the 52kg flyweight bout that followed, Marshall Mokgwaela was on the receiving end of Mauritian Lavigilante Olivier's heavy punches.

Olivier won the bout 16-5 to be crowned champion in the category. A fierce contest erupted between 2010 Commonwealth games silver medallist, Tirafalo Seoko and Ayabonga Sonjica of South Africa in the bantamweight and the local lad narrowly lost out 22-20. Seoko, whose defence was poor in the opening two rounds allowed Sonjica to score 16 points and his efforts to come back in the third round were too little too late as the South African emerged victorious.
