Botswana fails to increase medal tally at African Athletics Championships

Botswana has failed to increase its medal haul at the just-ended African Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. Botswana athletes won three medals in Nairobi, the same number they got in Ethiopia two years ago.

The 16-member contingent arrived in Nairobi bubbling with confidence and their coach, Bobby Gaseitsiwe declared that they would better the 2008 performance.

Sprinter, Amantle Montsho clocked a seasonal best of 50.03 seconds in the 400m race on her way to winning one of Botswana's two gold medals. The win meant Montsho successfully defended her title. The men's team won silver in the 4 x 400 metre relay, while high jumper, Kabelo Kgosiemang cleared 2.19 metres to win gold and retain the title he won two years ago. It was almost a repeat of the 2008 showing except that Isaac Makwala, who won bronze in Ethopia in the 400m, failed to climb the podium in Nairobi.
