Botswana scooped 95 out of 199 medals at the Zone VI Karate Championships held in Gaborone on Saturday. This makes 48 percent of the medals awarded during the competition, while the four other competing nations, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia and Mozambique shared 58 percent of the medals.

Out of 95 won by the local karatekas, 42 were gold, 28 silver and 25 bronze medals. The number of medals won ensured Botswana finished first in the tournament, followed by Zimbabwe with 56 medals. Namibia took position three with 32 medals in total.

Mozambique finished fourth with 14 medals, while Zambia finished last with only two medals. It was a great improvement by the locals who had won 72 medals in total at last year's tournament held in Mozambique. "It is a great achievement for us. It shows that we are moving in the right direction. Some of the participants were competing for the first time in this tournament, but still managed to win gold medals," Botswana Karate Association (BOKA) spokesperson, Jerry Ditlhong told  Sport Monitor after the tournament.
