BoBA Officials Quit En Masse

All officials of the Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) stepped down on Saturday during an Ordinary General Meeting (OGM).

The officials said they were just doing what the BoBA constitution says. The move comes after most BoBA affiliates passed a vote of no confidence on three members of the executive committee. BoBA vice president (technical), Mike Moroka; secretary general, Marks Nthusang; and competitions' manager, Phetogo Tsheko earned the wrath of the affiliates for their perceived role in the saga involving national team boxer, Mmoloki Nogeng. The three officials are said to have landed in trouble after they informed the affiliates that Nogeng would participate in the Keone Mooka Mageu Championship. This is despite the fact that BoBA executive committee explained that the three were just messengers as the decision on the boxer was taken by all the boxing officials.

Nogeng was not supposed to have taken part in the Mooka Mageu tournament because he had missed two interclub competitions due to the fact that BoBA had sent him to Cuba for training. Outgoing BoBA president, Aldrin Tayane said Nogeng's club, BDVC pleaded with them to allow the boxer to participate in Mooka Mageu tournament on the grounds that he had good reasons for missing the interclub competitions. BoBA then allowed the boxer to take part in Mooka Mageu tournament because it was the association which sent him to Cuba. Tayane asserted that since the entire executive committee took the decision, they are only following the procedure and the constitution, which says that when the vote of no confidence has been passed whether on the individual or the whole office, that person or the office should step down. BoBA officials are said to have taken the decision to step down before the end of last year prior to an OGM that failed to take place because of lack of quorum.
