BNSC to change awards venue

The Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) awards will this year be moved from its traditional home, the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) to the Fairgrounds.

The 31st edition of the event will be held at the Fairgrounds after problems were encountered during last year's broadcast of the event. BNSC spokesperson, Chris Nkwe, said with the introduction of live broadcast, they experienced space problems at the GICC. The live broadcast started two years ago. Nkwe said last year, the Council was forced to hire an extra tent due to the unavailability of space inside the GICC. He said Fairgrounds would give them two halls that will be enough for the main event. Meanwhile, Nkwe said preparations for the event set for April 9 have already started. He said they are waiting to receive nominations from adjudicating committees.

The deadline for receiving nominations was December 31, 2010. Nkwe said they have not secured a sponsor for the awards but negotiations with potential backers are underway. He said they are looking for P500,000 from the main sponsor who will retain naming rights. Nkwe does not agree that they have set the target high arguing that the event is a brand and that sponsors stand to derive a lot of mileage from it.
