Lobatse tennis courts, which have been turned into a white elephant, were handed over to the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) yesterday on a 15-year renewable lease.

The BNSC intends to complete the refurbishment of the courts by August so that they can host other sports like volleyball, basketball and netball. In recent years, the courts next to Lobatse Stadium have attracted the attention of a number of companies, which wanted to take them over. The BNSC has been given the nod after negotiations that took close to 10 years. The facility belongs to the Lobatse Town Council (LTC).

Speaking during the ground-breaking ceremony in Lobatse yesterday, BNSC chairperson Dorcas Makgato-Malesu said that after long negotiations, the LTC generously agreed to hand the courts to them. She said after getting the courts, they floated a tender that identified two companies to start the refurbishment. Tshepo Tile Construction Company will refurbish the club house and erect a security wall around the courts. Barrett's Courts have been given the task of turning the courts into a multi-sports facility. "The courts will be mainly used for development as there have been no courts in Lobatse to meet the requirement. Since they will be the only courts in Lobatse, they will be used for different competitions, although they've not been constructed to the stipulated international standards," she said. The BNSC boss thanked the town council for giving the courts to them despite interest from other organisations. Makgato-Malesu urged the Lobatse community to ensure that the courts do not get vandalised.
