BNSC-DSR Hold AIDS Workshop

Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) and the Department of Sports and Recreation (DSR) have been applauded for their efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS.

Participants at the HIV/AIDS Sports Role Models workshop at Yarona Country Lodge in Mogoditshane said on Saturday that BNSC and DSR have brought together sportspersons to encourage them to raise awareness about the pandemic. Mafolofolo women's volleyball star Tshepo Serwe told Monitor Sport that the workshop has been overdue. She said that it has been difficult to find information about HIV/AIDS but such workshops would enable them to access and pass information to the youngsters. "I'll definitely share some of the information I gathered here with youngsters at our team. It is important because they know the dangers as they are the ones who are sexually active," Serwe told Monitor Sport.

Chess star, Ignatious Njobvu applauded the workshop organisers because sportspersons interact with many people. He said that the workshop would help them to understand the dangers of HIV/AIDS well. "As a teacher, I'll be able to go and share some of the things I learnt here with my students in Maun. Youngsters look at sportspersons as role models and thus copy whatever we do," said Njobvu. He encouraged the BNSC and DSR to continue holding such workshops.
