BNSC chief backs decision to bar Dube

Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) executive secretary Kitso Kemoeng has said there is nothing wrong in former Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) spokesperson Glody Dube being denied the right to stand for elections over the weekend.

The elections were held to replace the committee that was dissolved three weeks ago after revelations of vote rigging in the February elections. Kemoeng said Dube was still serving suspension and that there was nowhere he was going to be allowed to stand. Dube was banned after his comments in the media following the Botswana national team's dismal performance in the Africa Junior Athletics Championships (AJAC) held in Gaborone last month.

Kemoeng said that the executive committee that Dube served on was dissolved but it did not mean that his suspension was lifted. "When a new government takes over the running of the country after the other government has been suspended it does not mean all events that happened during the old government are null and void," he said. He said the new committee would take over the responsibility of everything that the old committee left hanging. Kemoeng said Dube deserved a fair hearing and that it would be the new committee's responsibility to ensure he enjoys his democratic rights.
