BNSC awards judging system fails?

The Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) awards will be held on March 15 but so far, it is a mystery how the nominees would be chosen because the new selection system seems to have failed.

Under the new system, panels of three people were chosen to monitor the performance of administrators and sportsmen and women in each code. But the panels have failed to meet regularly for the last 10 months. Some people who sit in the panels are worried that names of nominees will be released in 'two weeks' time without their in put. In the new system, each category has an adjudicating panel that monitors the progress of athletes throughout the year unlike in the past where codes submitted competitors' profiles for consideration. The old system was abolished last year because only a section of the codes took part in the awards as others always failed to submit names. However, it has since emerged that the old system was comparatively better.

The new system has given the BNSC a lot of problems, as it has not been easy to manage different panels. Worse still, the panels still rely on the old system despite its shortcomings. Just like before, the adjudication starts late. Embarrassingly, people who never took part in the judging process last year were written letters after the awards to be thanked for spending their time and intellect in the process. A journalist who sits in the panels said he has only attended one meeting. The next thing he heard was that the finalists are about to be released. He was shocked to get a letter last year thanking him for taking part in the awards while he never did.
