BNOC receives London 2012 petal

The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) recently received a cauldron petal that made part of the London 2012 Olympic Games flame. Two-hundred-and- four couldrons were used in the Olympics to represent each member country.

The petal arrives just few weeks after the BNOC had received another symbolic artefact, a replica of the London 2012 Olympic Games torch.The petals add to a significant number of artefacts to the BNOC museum material. In addition to the two, BNOC is also in possession of replicas of the Delhi 2010 Queen's Baton Relay torch, accreditation cards from previous games among others.According to a statement from BNOC, the collection of the material is in line with the BNOC 2008-2016 Strategic Plan. The strategic plan amongst other things states that the BNOC should by 2016, have an Olympic and Commonwealth Museum, a Hall of Fame and a Library. The BNOC intend for the organisation to be a source of Olympic and Commonwealth games historic material for national and international consumption.

In the interim and while the BNOC is waiting to construct the hall of fame facility that will house the museum, hall of fame and library, all historical information and memorabilia will be at the BNOC offices. The artefacts are will be accessible to members of the public on request."These artefacts are core to the Olympic and Commonwealth movements, as they symbolise all that Olympism and Commonwealth ideals are, in visual terms," BNOC President, Negroes  Kgosietsile said.Kgosietsile said relic, and historical monuments make part of life values, and core reason for the existence of sport.  BNOC chief executive officer (CEO) Tuelo Serufho said that the petal is part of a large flame, which burnt in unison with other countries at the London 2012 Games. "Our position signifies our active participation amongst other nations for all the Olympic values. It is at home in our board room, and many other historic monuments shall be stored safely as well for the inspiration drawn from them"," he said.
