BNOC post still vacant

The Botswana National Olympics Committee (BNOC) has not appointed a publicity secretary to replace Solly Reikeletseng, three months after a new committee was elected.

The post has been vacant after Reikeletseng decided to vie for BNOC presidency albeit unsuccessfully while his would-be successor, Bobby Gaseitsiwe ,pulled out of the elections at the last minute even though he was unopposed. The new committee was then given a mandate to appoint a publicity secretary at a meeting last month. But matters took a different turn after it emerged that the powers to fill the post lie with the affiliates and not the committee.

A BNOC official, Dickson Gabanakgosi said the post will only be filled after a meeting to have affiliates choose their candidate. He said they initially thought the committee had the power to fill the post but that is not the case. "The constitution is silent about that issue and we did not want to take advantage because we feared we may land in trouble," Gabanakgosi said. He said they have not decided when they will have a meeting to give affiliates the chance to vote. In the meantime, Gananakgosi and secretary general, Moses Moruise will handle publicity matters for BNOC.
