The Botswana Football Association (BFA)is battling to attract sponsorship, after it lost one of its trusted backers, Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL), which sponsored the Coca-Cola Cup for more than 20 years.

In a media release, BFA president, David Fani said KBL, which was sponsoring the tournament through its soft drink brand, Coca-Cola, would end the relationship after the 2011/2012 competition."Kgalagadi Breweries has informed the BFA that owing to the need for it to align itself to the new Coca-Cola strategic focus, it will cease sponsoring the Coca-Cola Cup at the end of the 2011/2012 football season and has proposed to extend the current contract for a period of one year to provide a transitional period," Fani said.

He said BFA and KBL have agreed that with effect from the 2012/2013 season, KBL, will, in line with the Coca Cola Company strategic focus, sponsor a national youth football league at the Under-17 level. Fani said KBL informed BFA that the international Coca-Cola Company, focus has shifted from domestic professional football to football development at grassroots level. He said BFA valued the Coca-Cola Cup and is aware of how important the competition had become to clubs. Fani promised that a new sponsor would be sought as soon as possible.
