BDF Cheetahs wins Rugby knock-out cup

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Gaborone rugby club, BDF Cheetahs have won the North-South knock-out cup after beating home side, EMG Gunners of Selebi-Phikwe 27-13 on Saturday.

At half-time, the dominant Cheetahs led 18-7. The champions made full use of the experience of their players, most of whom turn out for the national team, the Vultures.

The two military sides recently participated in the South African National Defence Force tournament with EMG performing better than the Cheetahs. On Saturday, Botswana Rugby Union secretary Sarid Pandor praised EMG for an improved performance. Besides reaching the final of the knock-out competition, EMG finished second in the league. Pandor said he sees a bright future for EMG if it continues with the improvement. He revealed that there is an upcoming African sevens club tournament and the four BDF rugby sides will participate in a qualifier in October to select Botswana's representatives.
"We also have a national sevens rugby qualifiers where all clubs in Africa will be participating. The games will be held in Tunisia and two winning clubs will then represent Africa in the Rugby World Cup in Dubai in 2009." Botswana is one of the 12 countries already selected to take part in the Tunisia games.
