BCA intensifies drive to promote cricket

As it intensifies its efforts to take cricket to the people, the Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) hosted a group of primary school teachers from the Kgalagadi at Matsha Non Formal Training Centre over the weekend to undergo cricket orientation courses.

The first session involved participants going through Fielding skills practice which gave them insight and feel of the cricket ball. The teachers went through catching (low and high catches), throwing (under-arm and over-arm) and stopping the ball (long barrier, one handed interception and retrieving the ball on the ground) progression skills exercises. The second session involved the teachers going through batting fundamentals that dealt with the three progressional stages namely; grip, stance and backswing. The participants had the opportunity to do some demonstrations in pairs and as a group. Working in pairs gave the participants the opportunity to assist and correct each other and also peer group teaching came in very handy.

This all culminated into a mini-game where participants exhibited the learnt skills in a game situation. The group was divided into two teams who all had the chance to bat and field. Meanwhile,  a girls' tournament for secondary schools around Francistown was held. The aim of the tournament was to promote women's cricket in the North.
