Athletics Flattered By AAG Slots

Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) says it is flattered by the 20 places it has been given in the squad for the All Africa Games (AAG) in Algeria later this year. BAA says this is the highest number of slots it has been given for an international event. BAA technical officer, Bobby Gaseitsiwe told Monitor Sport that he leaped for joy when he first learnt of the decision. He said it is a vote of confidence and trust that athletics can deliver at the AAG.

In the last event held in Abuja, Nigeria in 2003, athletics got two gold medals through Kabelo Mmono in high jump and the men's 4x400m relay team. This time, Gaseitsiwe says he is confident of six gold medals. He tips Gable Garenamotse in the long jump; Mmono and Kabelo Kgosiang in high jump; US-based youngster Onalenna Oabona and veteran Glody Dube in the 800m; and California Molefe, a regular participant in European circuits as gold medal prospects.

The other medal, he says ,should come from Amantle Montsho, the only Botswana female athlete currently on International Olympic Committee (IOC) scholarship. She is based in Senegal where she is training under specialists.
From her Senegal base, Montsho frequently competes in European circuits. She aims to become the first female athlete from Botswana to bring a medal from the AAG. "Definitely it will not just be numbers that we are carrying. We want to take athletes who would not let us down.
