Another stern test for Zebras

The national soccer team - the Zebras - face another stern test when they host unpredictable Burundi in a 2008 African Nations Cup qualifier at the National Stadium on Sunday. The Zebras surprised many people with a 0-0 draw against champions Egypt last October but remain the only side without a win in Group 2. With only one point from the Egypt game, they lie bottom of the four-nation group after two games.

The Zebras suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat against minnows Mauritania in the opening game, denting their ambitions to qualify for the tournament for the first time. Zebras are ranked 26th in Africa with Burundi lying five places below. On paper, the Zebras should have little problems against the central Africans. But Burundi have proven to be a tough nut and will be buoyed by their 3-1 win against Mauritania last October.

On Sunday, the Zebras led by Englishman Colwyn Rowe will have to put their draw against Egypt behind them and focus on the job at hand. Fortunately, all the players Rowe wanted are available and nothing less than victory would suffice. Though the coach  will be forced to change tactics to accommodate the comeback of South African-based professionals, Diphetogo Selolwane and Mogogi Gabonamong, this should not be used as an excuse when things do not go according to plan.
