Amos eyes gold in Russia after niggling injury

Last year's 800m Olympics silver medallist, Nijel Amos, returns to action this weekend when he vies for gold at the 27th World University Summer Games in Kazan, Russia.

The games, also known as the Universiade, kick off on Saturday and run through to July 17.Amos has missed a number of competitions in recent months owing to a quad injury. Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) vice president Glody Dube said Amos has been warned against forcing himself if the injury recurs. Dube said: "He (Nijel) will be competing at the university games in Russia, but we said if he did not feel well he should come back. The injury has been giving him problems."

At least, four other local athletes are expected to participate at the Games. The Games are held every two years and this year's take place in Kazan. The 2013 edition is billed as "the first high-profile multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia" and are predicted to attract 13,500 participants (up from 7,844 at the 2005 event). The Games present Amos an opportunity to step up his World Championships preparations.
