AJAC get underway as Botswana athletes falter

The 10th edition of the Africa Junior Athletics Championships(AJAC) got underway at the UB Stadium in Gaborone yesterday, with a colourful opening ceremony kick-starting proceedings.

Officially opening the competition, vice president, Mompati Merafhe said Botswana is honoured to have been given the opportunity to host the tournament.

Merafhe welcomed visiting countries and encouraged them to take time off during the games to experience the diverse cultures of the country. He said the event offers the African continent an opportunity to take stock in great depth of various sports development programmes. Merafhe said the competition also gives young athletes the opportunity to showcase their talent and prepare them for bigger stages.
