Africa Junior Athletics organisers appeal for volunteers

The Africa Junior Athletics Championships Local Organising Committee (LOC) is appealing to Batswana to volunteer their services for the event.

The organisers are looking for 300 volunters with various skills to assist in the managing and running of the event. LOC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng, said they are looking for volunteers who are not necessarily into sports.

"We do not want this event to be an event for sports only," he said. Volunteers are sought in security, transport, technical, team aid, medical, catering, translation, accreditation, administration and medal awards. Reikeletseng said LOC is looking for people who are not necessarily members of the Sports Voluntary Movement (SVM). The LOC has asked for a certain number of volunteers from SVM. "There are people out there who are not necessarily part of the SVM but have skills that we may need," Reikeletseng said.  Botswana hosts the Africa Junior Athletics Championship for the first time. The event runs from May 12-15 in Gaborone. Reikeletseng said a successful hosting of the Africa Junior Athletics Championship will open opportunities for the country to stage other international events. Over 2, 000 athletes from more than 50 African countries are expected to take part in the competition.
