Match background

This clash between ‘outgoing champions’ and virtual ‘champions elect’ signals a change in the English top-flight, as Liverpool look to complete a league ‘double’ over a team which has dominated in emphatic fashion in recent years.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City won an unprecedented four straight Premier League titles, but there will not be a fifth in a row this campaign, with Arne Slot’s Liverpool set to take the honours and lift the trophy come May.

However, the Citizens – for all their weaknesses this season – remain a talented and potent outfit which could yet put a dent in the Reds’ title ambitions, and at least cede the title knowing that they bloodied the nose of the team which will likely take their place as champions.

What the teams are saying

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on his rivalry with Liverpool down the years: “You know the opinion I have and the respect. We fought the biggest battles in my time here. Always I have a big consideration for this club and nothing changes. They're doing well, they're so stable and really good, but that's good, we'll learn from that.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot on keeping his team firing on all cylinders: “What I want from [my players] and what they want from each other is that they fight in every single game from the first until the last second to get the maximum result and that's what the fans expect from them playing for this club. That's what we try to do in every single game and it's also necessary if you want to have any chance of a result in this league.”

Players to watch

Omar Marmoush, Manchester City Since arriving in the January transfer window, Egyptian attacker Omar Marmoush has brought a new vitality and directness to Man City’s attack. The 25-year-old could truly endear himself to the Etihad Stadium faithful with a match-winning showing against Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool Liverpool’s No. 11 has enjoyed an incredible season thus far, racking up goals and assists numbers that mark him out as one of the all-time Premier League greats. Against a City side that is weak on defending counter attacks, the speedy Salah will fancy his chances of creating and scoring more goals on Sunday evening.

Head-to-head

In head-to-head stats, Liverpool and Man City have met in 227 matches across all competitions dating back as far as 1893. The Reds have claimed 109 wins compared to 60 for the Citizens, while 58 games have been drawn.

When the teams last met, in a Premier League clash at Anfield in December 2024, Liverpool secured a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah. The result broke a four-game winless run in the rivalry for the Merseyside club.
