As a strategy to integrate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), technology and innovation expert Siphiwe Mabusela is advocating for the right use of the new tool in everyday lives through hosting AI Digital Shift Conference. The much-anticipated conference is set for May 14 at Aquarian Tide Hotel.

Mabusela said whilst the use of AI is on the rise across the globe, it is imperative to learn how best to use it and adopt it in everything that we do.

The technology and innovation enthusiast has warned that if the use of AI isn't properly integrated it will kill human creativity in everything that we do.

“AI is moving too fast. It is critical for us to understand, learn, and harness the power of AI for the betterment of our daily lives. Rather than blindly adopting it,” he said.

Mabusela indicated that hosting the conference will present an opportunity for most of Batswana on how best they can use AI to their advantage rather than entirely prompting it to do everything for them.

“So it's not all of us who are using this technology the right way and it's not all of us who fully understand this technology hence why we say ‘come and join us on May 14’ to discuss and go deeper into how each of us can benefit from this technological shift effectively,” he said.

Mabusela stated that with the right knowledge and skills, AI can be a force to be reckoned with in any industry. He indicated that it would prove to be useful in robotics, education and other industries.

“For instance, in education, we have built a diagnostic tool that helps in preventing cheating by students when doing their school work, even when they use AI for cheating this new application can detect that,” he said.

Though it might come off as if he is against the use of AI entirely, Mabusela stated that with the right use, the new technology has proven to be quite an asset in many aspects if used right.

“We have seen AI deliver significant and measurable improvement on three fronts which are workforce performance, automating routine operations, and keeping people from repetitive tasks,” he said.

To integrate AI successfully in Botswana, he said that the story will only be a success if people from different age groups get to attend the conference and amass great knowledge.

He recognised policymakers as the most sought-after people as they are the ones that make crucial decisions.

“We are calling people from all walks of life during our conference because this is where we will get to have a conversation about exactly how their industry can integrate this technology, so policymakers should be there mostly,” Mabusela said.

Tickets for the conference are sold at P1,000, P1,500, and P3,000.

When power scorns accountability

While every citizen, including the Head of State, has the right to voice opinions, the tone and context of the President’s comments were regrettably dismissive and risk chilling free expression in our country. The remarks are not isolated. They form part of a disturbing pattern of public attacks on independent institutions pillars essential to the healthy functioning of our democracy. The Judiciary, the Legislature, and now the media have all...
