Your Newspaper Is Anti-Women

GEMSA and BOMWA wish to express their grave disappointment over the Monitor editorial in its July 9 edition. The editorial was couched in what we regard as undignified emotive language and the end result is an unprofessional and unreasoned attack on women. The unethical attack on women has come about because women had objected to a degrading depiction of a woman political leader following the Botswana National Front (BNF) congress in Molepolole.

We would like to state that we find it unacceptable that a newspaper would go out of its way to publish a demeaning cartoon and then react to criticism by launching further anti-women attacks and, in the process, adding insult to injury by dragging in issues that have no relevance to the issue under discussion.

The cartoon was disturbing because it suggested that the newspaper sought to depict women in a negative light. But the subsequent editorial has confirmed our worst fears...that your newspaper is anti-women.
This fact is confirmed by your spirited attack that women such as ourselves have the political agenda of oppressing other women.
