Why is local media critical when others see a gem?

First it was Vice President Mompati Merafhe at a press conference celebrating the award to Botswana, of an award for good governance by a US organisation called Celebrate Africa Foundation (CAF). Then it was President Ian Khama at Merafhe's recent launch as an election candidate.

They both commented on the irony that some American newspaper had written glowingly about Botswana, and CAF chosen the country for its award, while the local independent media incessantly criticised the country's government.

To them, this clearly showed how negative the local media were towards the government.
