We need laws that protect rights of workers

Labour offices and industrial courts in this country are inundated with labour disputes, ranging from unfair dismissals, sexual harassment at work, slave wages and general abuse.

The bulk of these cases concern mostly people working in factories, where the knowledge of labour laws and rights of employees is lacking. Most of these factories are owned by foreigners. People have always complained that it seems our labour laws protect the employer more than the employee. This is the reason why there is so much violation against workers rights by employers.

There have been a lot of reports, especially from the textile industries but that is just the tip of the icebag. Workers, especially those who have not unionised, suffer a great deal in these work places. Besides being paid salve wages, some are dismissed from work when they are about to qualify for gratuity.
