We create government looters - P21 million losses our own fault

In reality every Motswana must be thankful that in this case we at least know where the money is going. In most cases we are clueless as to how much an ordinary taxpayer gets ripped-off. It is true that Batswana were swindled out of P21 million because there was a willing government official hell- bent on looting the people's resources in collusion with a heartless businessman. But the problem is largely our own government's making. Ours in that someone knowing supports the Daisy Loos because they stand to benefit. After all, we know people get kickbacks in the form of company directorships, shares and political campaign cheques as a reward for perpetrating corruption.

Picture this. Some years back a Permanent Secretary "signed" a multi-million Pula blank check for Daisy Loo to provide faulty non-starter technology in the form of so-called Enviroloo potable toilets. One of those useless gadgets in sitting in my parents' backyard as waste as we speak. As we speak those toilets litter our countryside hardly 10 years after they were purchased. Most were purchased either incomplete or faulty with no after sales service, maintenance or warranty whatsoever. A certain government minister is known to have been furious that government departments are frustrating Batswana businesses when legitimate questions were raised about the sustainability and otherwise of, in this case, enviroloos. Council employees responsible for purchasing the toilets are known to have been whipped into line by the wayward minister among others. It turns out the minister may have benefited from Daisy Loo and that the PS may have been a shareholder of sorts. A lot of other people including senior government officials would have known that the company was involved in inappropriate practices. But, hey, every one of them was at the very least willing to be a passive collaborator.
