Was Debswana Caught Napping?

The economic recession currently embedding nations of the world will remain a topical issue for quite some time till everything returns to normality.

Debswana diamond company is a company owned by the government of Botswana and De Beers in a 50/50 partnership and it's the sole diamond miner in Botswana operating the Orapa, Letlhakane, Damtshaa and Jwaneng mines. De Beers is an Oppenheimer family company while the government of Botswana has only 15 percent stake in it and it's the largest diamond company in the world monopolising the market, oddly unopposed and it still retains that monopoly today.

The purpose of this article is not to tell you about the history of this company but just to hit on the current market crunch impact on our economy. Debswana has until recently been known to be the biggest employer after government and having one of the best employee compensation strategy, especially for the educated cadre and it was also involved extensively in future employee training through its scholarship programmes which selected the 'cream". It has also been believed to be a prestigious and honourable opportunity to clinch a job with this diamond giant company, which is running a restricted entry small town of Orapa, which many will die hearing the name without having the opportunity to enter it because of its stickiest security measures where you could even be declared a prohibited immigrant (PI) of the town.
