The 'meaning' of discipline

Titus Mbuya, the Managing Editor of Mmegi, analysed the meaning of 'discipline' within President SKI Khama's 4 core principles of Development, Democracy, Dignity and Discipline.

He used the American Heritage College Dictionary to support his argument, noting that "discipline implies some form of control to achieve a desired behavioural pattern. Such a behaviour is imposed as opposed to being a positive outcome of ones socialization, be it at the level of family, educational institution or workplace". That Mbuya maintains President Khama's "fourth 'D' for Discipline seems to have spoilt what was otherwise a well received speech" is an indication of ones lack of a deeper understanding of the concept of discipline.

As Mbuya points out, discipline could imply some form of control to achieve a desired behavioral pattern. Undoubtedly control is key when we debate about discipline. Theories of control tell us that 'control', be it at the level of 'family, educational institute or workplace' is a given because behavior is inspired by what a person wants most at any given time: survival, love, power, freedom, or any other basic human need, as Glasser points out. In light of the foregoing, there is therefore a need to control and balance what one wants at a given time to avoid chaos and anarchy, because we are not leaving in isolation. For this we control and are controlled at all times within agreed norms and rules of the community.
