The demise of Saleshando

The BCP's Dumelang Saleshando is admittedly a very capable MP, a rare breed indeed and like Spencer once said in the Sunday Standard, it would be sad to lose him and equally painful not to have the BDP's Gomolemo Motswaledi in parliament.

But did you know that Saleshando was the least favoured in the 2004 elections race? Put differently, he is in parliament by default. See what happened, Margaret Nasha of the BDP polled 2901 votes, BNF's Kathleen Letshabo, 1917 votes and NDF 89. If you add up all these you get a whooping 4907 people who voted against Saleshando. He was elected by 2992.

The numbers simply show majority of Gaborone central electorates who voted did not want him to represent them in parliament. This should signal a looming danger in the coming elections. In 2004, BDP was infested with fierce factional fightings that could possibly have forced their members to vote for the opposition. In fact Saleshando acknowledges this complexity in Sunday Standard of August 24  by saying that "....beating the BDP may not be an easy task", a clear sign of maturing on his side.
