The country should not go down with the BDP

As the BDP infighting intensifies and the warring factions brace to eliminate each other our nation stands at the verge of a crisis of unparalleled proportions should the BDP be returned to power after the October elections.

What is certain is that political instability will set in as the party seeks to assert its authority over the President and the President also does like wise. In all likelihood, the Party will seek to recall the President, whilst the President in turn may seek to dissolve the Central Committee, and when that happens our country will literally go up in flames, with the result that the economy will collapse, and Batswana will overnight be turned into political refugees. What is currently happening within the BDP is consistent with other actions that the BDP government has taken at the national level. We recall, again, to put issues in perspective that the BDP as a party has not dissociated itself  from the steady erosion of civil liberties in the country that have become a defining feature of our reality. This is a country that until recently busked in the limelight of "a shining example of Democracy" in the African continent. As most of Africa marches towards democracy, sadly Botswana is retreating away from it. Civil liberties that we once took for granted are now mirages fast receding. The current state of affairs in the BDP has national significance not least because they have united the nation around concern for the erosion of democracy in Botswana. In the past, the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has charged the BDP of paying lip service to democratic ideals. Nobody believed us. Reaction from inside the BDP was a mantra of denialism.

The tragedy of the political soap opera that is currently unfolding within the BDP where a single individual refuses to submit to the democratic will of the people is that even the victims of this unprecedented exercise of arbitrary power are unwilling to concede that the man is a dictator, plain and simple.  These same victims are willing to experiment with the nation by insisting, contrary to all evidence, that this dictator is the right man to run our country. This is the real tragedy! It is apparent to us that the so-called pro-democracy movement within the BDP led by the Barata Pathi faction is nothing but an assemblage of cowardly apologists and accomplices in the systematic erosion of Botswana democratic ethos.
